Responsible business

Treat the regulatory map as a living document

Rules depend on the activity and location, not just the industry label.

Identify the actual questions

A business description should distinguish the products, services, customers and jurisdictions involved. Cannabis and hemp rules can involve different agencies and levels of government. A statement that an activity is permitted somewhere does not establish permission everywhere. Record the question that needs an answer and the authority relevant to that question.

Use qualified review

Keep links to official sources with the date they were checked and ask qualified counsel about the actual activity. A planning document is not a licence or a legal opinion. Revisit the map when the service, location or customer type changes. This article is about organizing questions; it does not determine whether a particular business may operate.

A short working checklist

  • Identify products, activities and jurisdictions separately.
  • Keep official sources and review dates.
  • Obtain advice about the actual proposed activity.
