Plan for a supplier interruption

A dependency map can reveal where a delay becomes a service problem.

Find the critical dependency

List the supplies or services that can stop delivery if they are unavailable. Note realistic lead times, substitutes and any constraints on using a different supplier. The cheapest item may still be operationally important if it cannot be replaced quickly. Keep the list focused on actual dependencies rather than every purchase the company makes.

Decide how to communicate

Define who contacts the supplier, who assesses the effect on current commitments and who informs customers. A substitute should be evaluated against the agreed specification, not accepted solely because it is available. Review the interruption afterwards and update the dependency map. The goal is a more understandable response, not a claim that every disruption can be prevented.

A short working checklist

  • Identify supplies that can stop delivery.
  • Review substitutes against the agreed specification.
  • Assign supplier and customer communication roles.
