Give a new colleague a usable first week

Onboarding should connect the person to the work and the team.

Show how work moves

Introduce the people a new colleague depends on, explain the main workflow and provide access appropriate to the role. Describe where current procedures are stored and how questions are escalated. A list of passwords is not an onboarding plan. The person needs to understand which tasks they own and which decisions require approval.

Make questions welcome

Arrange short check-ins that focus on what is unclear rather than asking only whether everything is fine. Pair a demonstration with an opportunity to practice safely. Explain the expected result of an early task and review it together. Update the onboarding material when recurring questions reveal a gap. Different colleagues may need different ways to access the same information.

A short working checklist

  • Explain responsibilities and approval boundaries.
  • Provide role-appropriate access and current procedures.
  • Use early questions to improve the process.
