Communication

Build a newsletter around permission

A mailing list is a communication relationship, not a collection of addresses.

Explain the signup

Tell readers what they will receive and how to stop receiving it. Collect only the information needed for that purpose and check the applicable rules for your audience and location. An address shared for a service enquiry is not automatically permission for an unrelated promotional mailing. Purchased lists can create both trust and compliance problems.

Keep expectations consistent

Send material that matches the description at signup. Make the sender recognizable and the unsubscribe route easy to find. Keep a record of changes to the signup process and handle removal requests reliably. Evaluate useful engagement without treating tracking data as a complete account of a reader’s interests. This journal itself does not collect newsletter subscriptions.

A short working checklist

  • Describe the content and removal route at signup.
  • Keep service enquiries separate from mailing permission.
  • Check that removal requests are handled reliably.
