Responsible business

Review the business before expanding it

Growth adds coordination and risk as well as volume.

Look at repeatability

Before adding locations, clients or services, examine whether the existing delivery process is understood and can be repeated. Identify work that still depends on one person’s memory. Review the support load, supplier capacity and customer experience. A busy calendar alone does not show that the operating model is ready for a larger scale.

Choose a measurable next step

Describe the proposed change, the assumptions behind it and the evidence that would justify continuing. Check new jurisdictions or activities with qualified advisers. Set a review point and be prepared to adjust the scope. Expansion is a decision to evaluate, not a guaranteed reward for operating in a growing or fashionable industry.

A short working checklist

  • Check whether current delivery is repeatable.
  • Identify capacity and single-person dependencies.
  • Set a review point for the proposed expansion.
